Founded in 1944 by Walter Herdeg and Dr. Walter Amstutz in Zurich, Switzerland, Graphis magazine was launched with its inaugural issue in September/October 1944. The company was later acquired by B. Martin Pedersen in 1986, who subsequently relocated its headquarters to New York City. Under his leadership, the company redefined its Annuals and expanded its portfolio to include new books such as New Talent (featuring student work), Typography, Branding, Logo & Letterhead, and more.

Annually, Graphis extends invitations to professionals across various design industry communities to submit their work for consideration. From these submissions, the most exceptional works of the year are selected for Platinum, Gold, and Silver awards and are featured in hardcover Annuals as well as on the website.
