William Stone: Double Take

Opening during Upstate Art Weekend, 'Double Take' is a survey of conceptual works by Fluxus artist William Stone. Presented in a domestic setting, the exhibition features discernible typologies - chairs, tables, clocks, paintings - that, while technically functional and meticulously crafted, are infused with irony, irreverence, and abstraction. The result is a dream-like environment that's at once familiar and foreign, serious and cheeky, upending the viewer's expectations and exploring the space between fine art and design.

Stone’s work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and museums including The New Museum, MoMA PS1, James Fuentes Gallery, Emily Harvey Gallery, and DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art. ‘Double Take’ is his first solo exhibition since 2020.

Over a dozen works by William Stone are featured in the show including: Corrected Chair, an assemblage of three cascading oak office chairs; Rustic Rietveld, a rustic variation of Gerrit Rietveld’s Red Blue Chair assembled by a type of traditional scaffolding; Omphaloskepsis, a grandfather clock with video projection; and Top Drawer, part of a table seemingly melting into the top of a dresser.
