Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch architect and designer who is known for his contributions to modern furniture design. Rietveld was born in 1888 in Utrecht, Netherlands and began his career as a furniture maker. He later studied architecture at the Technical School in Amsterdam and worked as an architect and designer in the early 20th century.

Rietveld is best known for his furniture designs, which are characterized by their use of geometric forms and primary colors. He was a member of the De Stijl movement, which sought to create a universal visual language based on simple geometric forms and the use of primary colors. Rietveld's furniture designs are known for their innovative use of materials and construction techniques, and many of his pieces have become iconic examples of modern design. Rietveld's work has been widely exhibited and is held in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He died in 1964.
