Ann B. Murphy: Birds and Babies
On view through July 19.
âMy artwork is a visual report of interactions with real and imaginary people, with animals, and with books I read. For me, drawing and painting are like writing with images and I start every day in the studio by writing in pen on paper. My writing practice organizes my artwork by queuing ideas and memories that I later turn into visual works. The pink figure recurring in these works is my daimon (or guiding spirit) whom I call 'the Pink Guy.' He pushes me to take on creative challenges that feel scary, or sometimes silly, but his instincts are always spot-on, and I am grateful to him for the enduring companionship.
Lately, I have been thinking about fences and boundariesâwith my neighbors, my personal history, and the world at large; all three aspects converge in my work. In the drawings, Topsider and Birds and Babies, I use stone walls and brick paths to lead a sequence of events and participants to converge in one dynamic moment.â
'Birds and Babies' is Ann B. Murphy's first exhibition with Available Items. It will remain on view through July 19.
