Known for his vibrant, loosely structured grids of color, Whitney has developed a distinctive approach to abstraction that draws on Abstract Expressionism, jazz, African American cultural traditions, and the history of painting.

Across 440 pages, the book brings together large- and small-scale paintings, gouaches, graphite drawings, and intimate photographs of the artist's studio. The chronological presentation reveals the evolution of Whitney's practice, from expressive early compositions to the richly colored, rhythmic arrangements of rectangular forms that have become his signature.

Beautifully produced and generously illustrated, this substantial monograph offers an unusually comprehensive look at one of contemporary abstraction's most distinctive voices. An important reference for collectors and admirers of postwar and contemporary painting.

Stanley Whitney
Stanley Whitney
Karma, New York, 2015
Hardcover
440 pages
315 color illustrations
7.5 × 9 inches
ISBN 9781942607113
Out of Print
